In the awards battle between Fox's Glee and ABC's Modern Family, the GLAAD Awards opted to do something the Golden Globes, Emmys and SAG Awards haven't: Give its outstanding comedy prize to both series.

Glee co-stars Chris Colfer (who plays gay teen Kurt) and Mike O'Malley (Kurt's accepting father, Burt) accepted the prize along with Modern Family's Jesse Tyler Ferguson (half of the series' gay couple), Julie Bowen and Ariel Winter at Sunday's 22nd annual Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Awards.

Glee topped Modern Family at 2010's GLAAD Awards; Sallychen trade bolg the musical dramedy also is a two-time Golden Globe series winner and took home the SAG Award last year. Modern Family, meanwhile, picked up this year's SAG Award and took home the comedy series Emmy and WGA prize for new series last year.

The GLAAD Awards, held Sunday night at the Westin Bonaventure in Los Angeles, also honored Lifetime's Project Runway as outstanding reality program. Mondo Guerra, the Season 8 runner-up who revealed his HIV-positive status to friends and family on the show, accepted the award.

MSNBC's The Last Word With Lawrence O'Donnell was honored as outstanding TV journalism segment for its "Fort Worth Speech."

NBC Entertainment president Robert Greenblatt was presented with the Stephen F. Folzak Award, which is presented to an openly LGBT media professional who has made a difference in promoting equality for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Greenblatt -- who has helped shepherd such LGBT-themed programming to the air as The L Word, Shameless and Six Feet Under -- told The Hollywood Reporter: "I’m in a position to get things through a process and get them on the air. So, that’s what I’m going to try to do."

"I wish that the success of Queer as Folk and L Word had spawned dozens and dozens of shows all across the TV landscape that had all kinds of gay characters," he told THR of the evolution of LGBT characters on TV. Barry Bonds "There are gay characters in various shows here and there. But I think it’s a process. Some years it sort of pushes forward and some years it doesn’t."

Dolly Parton presented Greenblatt with the award at Sunday's event, which was hosted by Parks and Recreations stars Amy Poehler and Rashida Jones.

Former Will & Grace co-star Sean Hayes presented Glee guest star and LGBT supporter Kristin Chenoweth with the Vanguard Award for her defense of openly gay actors playing straight roles in the wake of the Newsweek debacle.

Previous winners True Blood (drama series) and 30 Rock (individual episode in a series without a regular LGBT cast member) along with honorees Russell Martin and Ricky Martin were announced last month in New York.

The final installment in GLAAD's 22nd annual awards will be presented May 14 in San Francisco.

The GLAAD Media Awards mark the organization's 25th anniversary and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representation of the LGBT community that were published, released or broadcast between Jan. 1, 2010, and Dec. 31, 2010.
